Town Hall Talk: Spain, The Forgotten Alliance

  • The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum & Boca Raton Historical Society (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join the Boca Raton Historical Society for a “Town Hall Talk” featuring author and Smithsonian Scholar Martha Gutierrez-Steinkamp on July 22, 2026!

This season of Town Hall Talks, sponsored by the GOLS FOUNDATION, is commemorating America's 250th anniversary. These lectures are presented in Boca Raton's original Town Hall in the Council Chambers.

Martha Gutierrez-Steinkamp joins us to discuss her book “Spain: The Forgotten Alliance.” In this engaging talk, Gutierrez-Steinkamp uncovers Spain’s often overlooked yet decisive role in securing American independence. While France’s support during the American Revolution is widely recognized, Spain’s military strategy, financial contributions, and diplomatic efforts were equally vital to the Patriot victory. Discover how Spanish forces, led by figures such as Bernardo de Gálvez, weakened British strongholds along the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Valley—changing the course of history.

Drawing on extensive research, the author brings to life the global dimensions of the American Revolution and reveals how international alliances shaped the birth of the United States. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the complex political landscape of the 18th century and the enduring legacy of Spain’s support.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, educator, student, or simply curious about the untold stories behind America’s founding, this presentation offers fresh insight into a “forgotten alliance” that helped define a nation.

Doors Open: 6:00 PM for check-in and refreshments.
Lectures Begin: 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers

Non-Members: $10

Offered monthly on Saturdays, Creation Station is a drop-in program featuring an art activity inspired by artworks currently on view. Start your visit with a fun gallery exploration using kid-friendly prompts and activity aids that highlight a featured artwork. Then head to the studio to create your own piece using a variety of materials and techniques. Each month brings a new theme to keep things fresh, creative, and connected to the exhibitions. Designed for children ages 5 and up. No preregistration required—just bring your imagination!

In July, families will explore Sol LeWitt’s Wavy Vertical Brushstrokes, a painting filled with lively flowing lines. They’ll notice how those lines seem to wiggle, sway, and create their own sense of rhythm. After time in the galleries, families will experiment with colorful materials like yarn and ribbons to make their own artwork inspired by flowing lines.

Free with paid Museum admission.

Marcus King Band at Mizner Park Amphitheater

Enjoy Marcus King Band at Mizner Park Amphitheater on May 31, 2026!

GRAMMY-nominated country-americana star Marcus King will hit the road this summer with his powerhouse band for the Darling Blue Pt. 2 Tour, a 39-city run across the U.S. and Canada. Joined by special guests Penelope Road and Willow Avalon for select dates, the tour will make stops in major markets including New York City, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta, highlighted by Marcus King Band and Friends, a hometown show at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium on May 27.

King closed out 2025 with the release of his highly-anticipated new album, Darling Blue, deemed one of “Nashville’s Best Albums of 2025” by The Tennessean. The record goes through the peaks and valleys of King, taking listeners through his love for the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as his state of mind before and after he met his wife, Briley. Forbes praised the album as “a collection of standout tunes that straddle the line between old-school rock rowdiness and time-tested country twang,” while Country Central complimented its “signature, undefined flair of Southern steadiness that King uses to flit between the blues, soul and down the middle cowboy crooners, all with the flick of a guitar pick.”
