Explore early African American film history with Dr. Terri Francis, Associate Professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Miami and author of Josephine Baker’s Cinematic Prism. Dr. Francis shows the creativity and ambition that the St. Louis performer brought to the complex colonialist milieu of 1920s Paris, France through discussion of Baker’s few but luminous film roles. Among the first African American film stars, Baker’s screen work was groundbreaking both in Europe and the United States. This talk shines a light on Baker’s legacy while paying tribute to a constellation of Black film pioneers, including scenic artists, in and beyond Hollywood.
